On hot summer days, especially when those super-sweet Cave City and Hope watermelons are available for sale around the state, we love making a batch of delicious and colorful watermelon lemonade. The recipe came from one of our friends who is a Family and Consumer Science Educator with the Cooperative Extension Service, and she shared some of the reasons this drink is perfect for this time of year.
Hydration: Watermelon is made up of about 92% water, making it an excellent choice for staying hydrated on hot days. Combined with the electrolytes from lemon juice, this drink helps keep you refreshed and hydrated.
Nutrient-Rich: Watermelon and lemons are packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Watermelon provides vitamins A, B6, and C, as well as lycopene, which is known for its health benefits. Lemons add an extra dose of vitamin C, enhancing your immune system.
Natural Sweetness: The natural sweetness of watermelon reduces the need for added sugars, making it a healthier alternative to many store-bought beverages. You can adjust the sugar level to your preference. We prefer to use no-calorie sweeteners like Stevia, but you can also substitute a natural sweetener like honey or agave syrup.
Cooling Effect: Both watermelon and lemon have a naturally cooling effect on the body, making this drink ideal for beating the summer heat.
Versatility: Watermelon lemonade can be easily customized. Add a handful of fresh mint for a refreshing twist or a splash of sparkling water for a fizzy delight. It’s also a great base for summer cocktails. Just add a bit of your favorite spirit!
As you can see, watermelon lemonade is not just a delightful blend of sweet and sour flavors but also a powerhouse of hydration and nutrients. It’s a versatile drink that can be tailored to suit your taste and is perfect for sipping by the pool, at picnics or during any summer gathering. So, the next time the temperature soars, grab a watermelon and some lemons and whip up a batch of this rejuvenating drink to stay cool and refreshed. Cheers to a delicious and healthy summer!
Watermelon Lemonade Recipe
4 cups seedless watermelon, cubed
1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 4-5 lemons)
1/2 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
2 cups cold water
Ice cubes
Fresh mint leaves (optional for garnish)
Lemon slices (optional for garnish)
Start by cutting the watermelon into small cubes. You’ll need about 4 cups.
Next, place the watermelon cubes in a blender and blend until smooth. If desired, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the pulp, but this step is optional.
While the watermelon is blending, juice your lemons until you have about 1 cup of fresh lemon juice. This usually takes around 4-5 medium-sized lemons.
In a large pitcher, combine the watermelon juice, fresh lemon juice and 1/2 cup of sugar. Stir well until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add 2 cups of cold water and mix again.
Fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the watermelon lemonade over the ice. Garnish with fresh mint leaves, chunks of watermelon and lemon slices if desired.
Your refreshing watermelon lemonade is ready. Enjoy!

Keith, can this be made with a sugar substitute as well?
Absolutely, Debbie. We often use Stevia or Splenda instead of sugar.
